Experiencing the beauty of nature or “roughing it”, need not be as uncomfortable as some people picture it.
We do not need to sleep on the hard, cold earth to be a certified outdoors person. In fact, we can still sleep in a soft and comfortable bed. This can be done by having air mattress sleeping bags.
An air mattress sleeping bag, also known as an air-cushioned sleeping bag or inflatable sleeping bag, consists of a rectangular base and a rectangular cover connected on the edges with a zipper. In between the base and the cover are two layers of mat cloths. The bottom layer has inflatable chambers inside it while the top layer has insulating materials. This top layer is where the occupant lies.
The air-cushioned sleeping bag has the same use as that of the usual sleeping bag. It has some insulation property, with an additional perk of having the comforts of a real bed. It can also be inflated in just a matter of minutes.
However, this type of sleeping bag does not give enough insulation compared to a down or a synthetic sleeping bag. In addition, expect that this sleeping bag is bulkier and heavier than other types of sleeping bags. Plus, there is still the air pump that you need to bring along. It can be used in warm weather, indoor sleepovers, and casual camping. But it is not advisable to use this in wet environment and any type of extreme outdoor activities or camping.
Just to make it clear, air mattress sleeping bags are different from camping beds and sleeping pads. Camping beds are just air mattresses minus the flaps. On the other hand, sleeping pads are mats inserted in or beneath sleeping bags to add cushion.
Inflatable sleeping bags are usually manufactured for kids. Some popular brands are Exxel Inflatabed Galaxy Camper and Disney EZ bed Inflatable Mattress. The price range for these sleeping bags is $20 to $150.
Before purchasing an air mattress sleeping bag, consider where and when you will be camping. Is it on a rocky place where the sharp rocks can puncture your air mattresses? Will you be camping when the weather is still very cold? If so, the air-cushioned sleeping bag is not the right one to get. Remember, the most important thing about sleeping bags is insulation, and then comfort. It is better to have an achy back than die from hypothermia.
